Armenian President visits PKU

Peking University, Mar. 27, 2015: The morning of March 27 saw the visit of Serzh Sargsyan, President of the Republic of Armenia. A ceremony was held at Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center to welcome the president’s visit and confer him the title of honorary professor in political science and then a speech was delivered by the president to the audience present.

PKU President Lin Jianhua first warmly welcomed Armenian President’s visit to Peking University. He said that both China and Armenia have a long history and abundant cultural deposit, and people from both nations share a profound friendship, which lay a solid political foundation for the sound development of bilateral relations. Lin pointed out that Armenia plays a crucial role in building the “New Silk Road”---a vision of economic, transit, infrastructure and human links between South and Central Asia. Then, Lin announced Peking University’s decision to award Armenian President “Honorary Professor of Political Science” and congratulated him on becoming a member of Peking University. Lin hoped that both sides could witness more exchanges and cooperation in all fields, culture and education in particular, in the near future.

After the speech, Lin presented the Armenian President with a certificate of honor, after which a student representative gave Sargsyan a PKU Logo as a token of friendship. Then the President delivered an address concerning the new direction of Armenian foreign policy and the prospects for the development of Sino-Armenia relations.

Sargsyan said that he was very proud of Armenian people as they took great efforts to struggle for national independence during the Second World War. He then said that Armenian future foreign policy would aim at safeguarding world peace, security and stability based on its national interests. Furthermore, he recalled that in recent years the friendly cooperation between China and Armenia has made substantive progress and Armenia had great confidence in the development prospect of bilateral relations.

The Armenian President expressed his hope for more fruitful exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in areas of economy, trade and humanities. He also felt grateful for PKU students and faculty for attending the ceremony, and promised that he would dedicate himself to enhancing the exchange and cooperation in culture and education.

Before the ceremony, Zhu Shanlu, PKU Council Chairman, met with Serzh Sargsyan and had a conversation in the VIP hall.
